In a remarkable story of survival and community spirit, 105-year-old Jayne Huston is recovering after being rescued from the wreckage of her home in Rocky Point, Port Salerno, Florida, following a devastating tornado spawned by Hurricane Milton on October 9.
Born in 1919, Huston has witnessed nearly a century of history, and until recently, she never imagined her home would be taken away. However, the ferocity of Hurricane Milton brought a 6-foot storm surge, heavy rainfall, and destructive winds, leading to numerous tornadoes that wreaked havoc across the region. The hurricane resulted in extensive damage, flooding streets, destroying homes, and tragically claiming lives.
Family’s Heartfelt Appeal
Following the disaster, Huston’s family launched a crowdfunding campaign to aid her recovery and rebuilding efforts. “We know so many are suffering, and our prayers go out to all that have been affected throughout our state,” the campaign states. The funds will support Huston as she transitions from the hospital to temporary housing and, hopefully, back into a new home.
Jayne’s great-grandson, Rylee Huston, recounted her incredible survival story. Instead of being in her vulnerable living room, Jayne was in her bathroom, which withstood the tornado’s powerful winds. Neighbors found her amidst the rubble and pulled her to safety. “It’s a miracle,” Rylee reflected. “I can’t tell you how and why, but she survived.”
Currently hospitalized, Jayne faces surgery on her foot and is recovering from a badly bruised back. “She’s distressed. She’s upset,” Rylee shared. “She keeps thinking, ‘I want to go home,’ but she doesn’t have a home to go to.” The loss is profound, as her home held a lifetime of memories, including passports and keepsakes from her travels with her late husbands.
As family and friends sift through the wreckage, they search for items of sentimental value that represent Jayne’s rich life. The community’s response highlights the strength and resilience of those affected by Hurricane Milton, as they come together to support one another in the face of adversity.
Jayne Huston’s story is a testament to survival against the odds and the power of community. As she embarks on her journey to recovery, the support from her family and neighbors will play a crucial role in helping her rebuild her life after this unimaginable tragedy.
