CBI to Administer Lie Detector Tests in Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case

Kolkata, August 24, 2024 The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has announced that lie detector tests will be conducted on four medical professionals who were colleagues of the 31 year old trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical Hospital in Kolkata. The CBI’s decision follows discrepancies in the statements provided by the four individuals, who include two first-year postgraduate training doctors, a house surgeon, and an intern doctor.

Investigation Focus

The CBI has clarified that while there is no direct evidence suggesting the involvement of these four doctors in the crime, the agency is investigating whether they might have played a role in tampering with evidence or being part of a potential conspiracy. The investigation has also examined the sequence of events leading up to the incident.

Timeline of the Night

According to the CBI, the victim and two postgraduate trainees had dinner together around midnight and later watched Neeraj Chopra’s javelin throw competition in the seminar room. At approximately 2:00 a.m., the two colleagues went to the slip room, while the victim remained in the seminar hall. The intern, who was in the intern room on the same floor, claims to have interacted with the victim.

Discovery of the Body

The following morning, one of the doctors who had dined with the victim found her body in an unconscious state around 9:30 a.m. during his rounds. He promptly alerted his colleagues and senior doctors, who then notified the hospital authorities.

Legal and Procedural Developments

The CBI has secured permission from a special court to conduct lie detector tests on the four doctors as well as Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college and hospital. This decision comes with judicial consent, ensuring that the tests are conducted within legal and ethical guidelines.
