The recent rape incident in Kolkata has caused widespread outrage across the country, leading to significant protests. The accused was apprehended within 24 hours, and the case was transferred to the CBI. Despite these swift actions, protests continue. Authorities have stated that the primary accused has been captured, but there are concerns about possible connections to a larger gang.

The Mysterious Disappearance of Sanjay Roy and His Hidden Past
The situation is more complex than it initially appears. According to reports from the High Court, Supreme Court, newspapers, media and post-mortem details, the central issue involves a person named Sanjay Roy. In 2016, Roy worked as a cook at RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal. He lived with his mother, sister, and his wife, from whom he was divorced. One day, Roy suddenly disappeared from the college, and his absence went unnoticed. For the next three years, his whereabouts were unknown. In 2019, Sanjay Roy joined the Civic Volunteer Force in West Bengal, which was temporarily recruiting due to a shortage. These volunteers assisted the police and were paid ₹12,000. Initially, Roy joined this force but later managed to shift to the Police Civil Welfare sector. This sector involved working with hospitals and offered opportunities for additional illegal income. After shifting to the Police Civil Welfare sector, Roy began visiting RG Kar Medical College regularly. He exploited his position to arrange free hospital admissions for patients and earned extra money through illegal means. Due to his background in boxing, Roy was assigned responsibilities related to security at the college. However, instead of focusing on genuine security duties, his primary goal was to use his position to conduct illegal activities and generate extra income through corruption Certainly.
Sanjay Roy’s Influence and Misuse of Power From Recruiting Civic Volunteers to Taking Over a Barrack
“But alongside this, he also collected money from the new recruits and enrolled them as civic volunteers. And it had to be a police welfare position. Sanjay Roy had built a strong connection by flattering people from the student wing. There is a police welfare board with a central committee of 14 members, which works for the welfare of police families. His links became so strong that Sanjay Roy was also included in it. However, due to his disapproval, several police transfers also occurred. Because of this, there were complaints against him. He also had the biggest role in the transfer of 6 policemen from Tala Police Station and Syambazar Police Station. When this happened, Sanjay Roy’s name came up. The Times of India also reported it. Even after this, nothing happened to him. Now, alongside this, in the same year 2020, a barrack was also allocated to him, which is meant for police constables and higher ranks. But at that time, he also got that barrack. The barrack that was supposed to be for ASI Anoop Dutta was used by Sanjay Roy, who is known to have a lot of connections with ASI Dutta.
Sanjay Roy’s Rise in Influence and Personal Struggles From Misusing His Position to Facing Domestic Violence Claims
“Those who used to watch the news also found out that Dutta, who was on the run, had the media chasing after him as well. Now, there is an inquiry happening about him too. Sanjay Roy used to get 5 liters of petrol daily for his bike, and he also received ₹12,000 as per his work requirements. Additionally, he earned money through illegal means by providing beds and other services. He was enjoying benefits from all directions. Now, a year later, in 2021, there was a major change at RG Kar College. A new principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, was appointed. He was previously the Vice President of National Medical College, where he faced several allegations. His transfer to RG Kar Medical College was intended to make him the principal. When he became the principal, Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali, who had been at the college for 16 years, observed that Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, had become very close to the principal. At that time, Sanjay Roy had even written “Kolkata Police” on his bike to influence people around him, although he was a civic volunteer. He also had a T-shirt with “Kolkata Police” written on it. People around him began to perceive him as part of the police force, and they couldn’t distinguish between the police force and a civic volunteer. And at that time, he had quite a strong influence, even within the hospital campus, his authority was quite effective. Without any hindrance or restrictions, he could easily go to any ward, any floor, or any room he wanted. When it was his time again in 2020, he could remarry without any trouble, and the marriage would have taken place smoothly. However, a few days after the marriage, domestic violence began. Just as he used to beat his first wife, he started to beat his second wife in the same manner. The situation got worse when his wife was three months pregnant, and even then, he kicked her, which severely affected her condition. He used to beat her a lot and did not get her treated. Complaints were also filed at the police station regarding this. The girl’s mother came and lodged a complaint. Even after this, when nothing happened, her mother, defeated, took her daughter back. However, sometime later, his wife died.

2023 Scandal at RG Kar Medical College Allegations of Corruption and Mismanagement Under Principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh
“In the year 2023, at this time Sanjay Roy is leading a comfortable life. Meanwhile, the principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, was not having a good time. In June 2023, things had escalated as students and staff began making allegations that the principal was corrupt and involved in financial fraud and even theft of human body parts. The reason behind these allegations was the inquiry report published by Debal Kumar Ghosh, Special Secretary of the Bengal Health Department. In the report, Debal Kumar Ghosh stated that the principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, was involved in illegal activities with contractors, including significant financial misappropriations in the college’s construction and renovation work. An illegal secret agreement was also signed with the contractor for the bidding process. It was also mentioned that the principal was involved in malpractice with biomedical waste. In hospitals, biomedical waste, such as used injections and oxygen masks, should not be disposed of with normal waste because it could have severe consequences for public health. Therefore, there is a separate cell for managing biomedical waste, which ensures that it is collected and handled properly to prevent the spread of diseases like HIV and others. This biomedical waste cell destroys the waste to prevent any further harm.
Corruption Scandal and Student Unrest at RG Kar Medical College
Where has the chief gone, as Sandip Ghosh is not only failing to destroy biomedical waste but is instead selling it in the open market and keeping 20% of it for himself, with government officials also involved? This is dangerous for the public and action should be taken against it. After this, when the principal was involved, he faced a lot of backlash. TV Nine Bangla also conducted an investigation; when there was significant protest about it, the West Bengal government set up a SIT (Special Investigation Team) after two months to start a thorough investigation. Many issues came up, and the principal got into trouble. It was found that NRS Medical College and RG Kar Medical College had the same bed capacity, but the biomedical waste at NRS Medical College was 1,53,650 kg, whereas at RG Kar Medical College it was only 49,044 kg, a huge difference. Just as digital skill labs are set up in every college, when the digital skill lab at RG Kar Medical College was set up, it cost Rs 2 crore 97 lakh 36 thousand, whereas the same digital skill lab at Diamond Harbor Medical College cost Rs 61 lakh 41 thousand 249. The old employee of the college, Duty Superintendent Akhtar Ali, said, “What is going on? Is this a joke?” He also lodged a complaint and sent his report, and the SIT also sent a report. Following this, people started speaking out against the principal. In August 2023, the Kolkata police registered multiple cases under the Corruption Act and for financial misconduct against Sandip Kumar Ghosh. When nothing was happening, Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali, who had been backing the principal, started sending separate reports to the Anti-Corruption Department, Vigilance Commission Department, and Healthcare Department. Akhtar Ali also wrote a letter to Mamata Banerjee. When Akhtar Ali was not listened to, he was transferred from the college. However, after some time, students complained that they were being intentionally failed. Even those who scored 70 out of 100 were being failed in theory and were not receiving their internship completion certificates. Without these certificates, students could not practice. The situation worsened, with students running after the principal to beat him. Bouncers had to be hired to ensure the principal, Sandip Kumar Ghosh, could walk around the college.
Sanjay Roy’s 2024 Misconduct From Harassment to Inaction
The current protest involves students who were already unhappy with the existing system. Now, considering the current situation, all these things were going on, and as a result, the year had arrived; it was 2024. In March 2024, for that year, a man named Sanjay Roy, whose son was very ill, made a wrong gesture towards a woman. He helped her with her child’s treatment and medicines, and he gave money for it. The woman was very grateful to him. After that, Sanjay Roy did something he obtained the woman’s number from the medical prescription and started calling her repeatedly and sending obscene messages. He began to harass her severely, forcing her to meet him, and he intimidated her. When the woman became afraid and had no solution left, and when she was extremely distressed, she had to go to the Lalbazar police station to file a complaint. Lalbazar is the headquarters of the Kolkata police. After receiving the complaint, the police called Sanjay Roy and retrieved his call data record (CDR). He was caught because he was truly harassing her; the police had traced all the calls and messages. Sanjay Roy should have faced charges under the Indian Penal Code for harassment and criminal charges, and globally, there would have been many charges against him. In fact, his position as a civic volunteer should have been terminated as well. However, it is unclear why no action was taken against him in this case. The reason for not taking action against him might be that his misconduct emboldened him. If action had been taken against him earlier, such a situation might not have occurred. According to the rules, anyone hired as a civic volunteer should have no criminal background or any cases against them. However, Sanjay Roy had a domestic violence case filed by his wife, and despite this, he was still retained as a civic volunteer.”Nothing happened after the complaint against Sanjay Roy, but he did stop bothering that woman. One week after these incidents, there was another complaint against Sanjay Roy. In this complaint, he misbehaved with a female and was rude. He has a history of misbehaving with females, fighting, engaging in physical altercations, and arguing with them. However, he has never had a fight with any male.
Maumita Debnath’s Struggle A Closer Look at the Life of a Promising MD Student
But the incident that happened at RG Medical College involved Maumita Debnath , who was completing her MD after finishing her MBBS at the same college. An MBBS course is 5.5 years long, and an MD is a 3 year course. She was doing her MD there. In India, resident doctors often face very poor conditions; they are made to work extensively, and the hospital becomes their residence, which is why they are called resident doctors. At RG Medical College, there were about 300-400 resident doctors. The victim, who was pursuing her MD here, was the only daughter of her parents. Her parents had educated her with great effort; her father was a tailor, and their financial condition was not very good. The entire family was eagerly waiting for her MD to be completed because she was in her second year, and only a little time was left for her to become a doctor.
Sanjay Roy’s Disturbing Actions A Timeline of Events Leading to August 2024 Incident
What happened was that the first week of August had begun, from the 5th of August to the 8th of August, 2024. Sanjay Roy, as a civic assistant, went for some work at Kharagpur Salua and returned on the 8th of August. This was the day when Sanjay Roy was about to commit the biggest crime at RG Medical College Hospital. Sanjay Roy arrived at the hospital early in the morning; he had to admit one patient, who was a civic volunteer and was related to him. After admitting the patient, he was seen wandering around the hospital, following the victim, and then leaving the hospital according to CCTV footage.First, there is some work related to an X-ray, then he arrives at 11 PM and works. The patient’s surgery, which was planned for 1 AM, starts there, and he stays there. The relative of the patient, who was also his friend and a civic volunteer, sits behind the hospital boundary and drinks alcohol. After some time, when they have had enough to drink, they plan to go to Sonagachi, a red-light area, which is a little far from there. After going there, his friend goes inside, and Sanjay waits on the road. While waiting, Sanjay harasses the women outside. Afterward, his friend comes back out from inside, and they both go a little further to another red-light area called Chetla, Again, the friend of this person goes inside, and Sanjay Roy, standing outside, gives money to a girl and gets private photos on his mobile. After a while, his friend returns; the two of them roam around in the same area. After that, his friend books an Uber bike and leaves. Sanjay, who was drunk and in a disturbed state, is now alone. He watches violent adult content on his mobile and drinks more alcohol. After some time, he starts heading towards the hospital; it was around 2 to 2:30 am. The victim, on the other hand, had also arrived at the hospital, where she was working a 36-hour shift with limited breaks, having to work continuously for 36 hours without being able to go home, with all meals being provided at the hospital.”For the last 36 hours, she has been in the hospital, the victim who was supposed to talk to her parents at 11 PM, felt hungry afterward. The victim colleagues were in her first year they were juniors 2 people were there and they had ordered food from outside. After that, they planned to watch Neeraj Chopra’s Olympics live javelin throw. Their plan was to watch it on the TV in the seminar hall which was there on the 3rd floor. Three people reached the 3rd seminar hall, and three were from the chest medicine department. Afterward, the live match on the TV ended. The two friends left the seminar hall, and the victim stayed there to study. It was around 2 AM in the seminar hall. A staff member went to her and discussed the patient’s treatment, and then left. Until then, everything was fine. After that, at 2:35 AM, the victim received a message from her cousin on her mobile, and the victim replied to her. Then at 3 AM, a staff member passed by the side of the seminar hall, and at that time, the victim was lying on a mattress with a red blanket in the seminar hall, and she was sleeping on top of it.”And there, where the sleep room was, a polysomnography sleep disorder test was going on. Because of this, there was no other place available for her, so she ended up sleeping there. She always carried a diary with her, and she had her diary with her that day as well. She had written in her diary about her future plans, such as achieving a gold medal from college and working at some big hospitals where she had even mentioned her name. At that time, she was sleeping in a similar hall upstairs. The time had already passed 3:50 AM, and by this time, Sanjay Roy had already arrived at the hospital. When checked on CCTV, he was seen entering the hospital through the main gate at this time. And he was searching for his prey throughout the hospital. It wasn’t that he had left. Actually, there were various operation theatres and test departments in the hospital, and he went to check if there was any female patient unconscious. He was actually searching for someone to commit a crime. CCTV footage showed that he was looking in different rooms, and at 4:03 AM, he reached the 3rd floor.
Timeline of the Crime Seminar Hall Incident and Aftermath
And he enters the seminar hall when he was entering the seminar hall, there was a Bluetooth headset hanging around his neck. Because of this Bluetooth device, he will be caught after entering the hall. After reaching a similar hall, he sees the victim and then attacks her, choking her a lot. The victim struggles quite a lot. He entered the seminar hall at 4:03 Am and the time of death mentioned in the postmortem was 4:15 Am This means the struggle lasted for quite a while. The seminar hall was where speeches were given and it had soundproofing, so any noise made inside could not be heard outside. But he broke all limits, you all know the rest of what he did. After committing this crime, he left the seminar hall at around 4:40 Am staying in the hall for about 37 minutes. After leaving, he went to the barrack in the hospital where he was assigned and comfortably went to sleep there, showing no signs of tension in his mind.
And when it was morning on August 9, 2024, at 6:20 AM, when a staff member from the hospital entered the seminar hall. As soon as he entered, he screamed loudly, and after coming out, he explained the entire situation: the body had half clothes on, injuries on the face, broken glasses, blood coming from the eyes, and injuries all over the body. After learning all this, an hour later, between 6:30 and 7:30 AM, a large crowd gathered in the seminar hall. People wearing shoes entered the crime scene, which caused the situation to deteriorate further. Fingerprints were scattered everywhere. At that time, the highest authority, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who lived nearby, was called. After receiving the call, he arrived at the hospital an hour later. Before filing a police complaint, he himself went to check the seminar hall and criticized it heavily. He should have informed the police about the incident first instead of going to check it himself. After that, about an hour had passed, and the principal arrived at the office and called the police to inform them about the incident. At the same time, the college’s assistant superintendent called the victim’s home around 10:50 AM, and the victim’s mother answered the call. The assistant superintendent said only that your daughter’s condition is bad, and you should come to the college; nothing else was said, and the call was disconnected. After hearing this, the victim’s family called back.
Parents Dispute Suicide Claim, Autopsy Reveals Rape and Murder, and Rush to Cremate Sparks Public Outrage
According to the parents, the assistant superintendent said that their daughter had committed suicide. Hearing this, the family members were shocked and they started running towards the college. At the same time, around 11:30 am, the forensic team of the additional commissioner of police arrived at the crime scene inside the college. All the people created maximum pressure to ensure that everything should get happen in front of the Judicial Magistrate. Because there was previous doubt about what had happened, they insisted that everything should be be happen in front of the Judicial Magistrate. On the same day, at 12 am, the parents reached the college and said they wanted to see their daughter, but they were not allowed to meet her. For 3 hours, they continuously tried to meet their daughter but were not allowed to. They were only allowed to see their daughter once, and at 3:30 am, the parents were shown their daughter. Upon seeing her, the parents said it was not a suicide; they questioned how it could be. This caused the news to spread, and people began gathering in anger, as it was a major incident involving an on-duty doctor. However, at 6 am, the body was sent for autopsy. At that time, the victim’s friend, showing great understanding, said that no autopsy should be conducted without a video recording, and she made this demand. The autopsy that is done due to this is recorded in full on video. In the initial report, when it is mentioned where and how the injuries occurred, everyone understands that this is not a case of suicide but a case of rape and murder. Despite so much time having passed, no FIR has been filed yet. The postmortem is done without an FIR, and when the report comes out, everyone starts saying that this was not done by one person this is a gang rapeBecause this thing started spreading that 150 grams of semen was obtained from the private part, and on average, an Indian male body produces up to 5 mg of semen. This thing is not possible, so people started saying that it’s a gang rapeThe situation was such that it was found to be wrong. There were many other things as well. The way the situation was being handled, the doctors were observing and they suspected that there might be a deeper conspiracy; it seemed that everything was being hidden. Everything had already happened, the postmortem had been done, but until now no one had filed a complaint. However, the victim’s father went and registered the complaint. Students reported that the police were acting very quickly; they immediately went to the cremation ground and started the cremation of the body. There were already three bodies in line, but the police removed all of them and started the cremation of the victim’s body. People were angry about why there was such a need to rush.
Suspicion Arises and politics get starts The Unusual Suspect in the Seminar Hall Investigation
Here, politics starts. People get very angry. The government realized that if it wasn’t handled properly, things would get out of their control. So, they immediately instructed the police department to capture the accused by any means necessary. The police, therefore, started the investigation with full effort. When the police reached the crime scene, they found a Bluetooth earpiece there. The police checked all the cameras in the college, but there was no camera in the seminar hall. However, there were cameras in the lobby at the entry and exit of the seminar hall. The police began to examine who came in and went out of the seminar hall after 3 o’clock. , the police saw Sanjay Roy entering the seminar hall in CCTV camera, and the police had the most doubts about him because he was the only one who was not a doctor and had entered the seminar hall.At such a late hour ,And along with this, the victim and Sanjay Roy were together the most in the seminar hall. When Sanjay Roy was exiting the seminar hall after spending 37 minutes inside, at the time when the Bluetooth earpiece was being removed but it was there when he was doing the entry, Because of this, there was doubt on him, and the police arrived at his barrack. His clothes, which were There, were washed and changed, and he was comfortably sleeping. When the police took the Bluetooth earpiece near his mobile, it got connected, and then he was picked up and questioning started. He began to explain everything without any fear. When his mobile was checked and found violent pornography content from his mobile His entire search history was filled with all these things. Now, all these things were going on here, and within the college, the principal said why that the victim had gone alone to the seminar hall?. This made people even angrier, and by August 11, people started protesting on a small scale regarding these issues and also started demanding the principal’s resignation because there must be some link of theirs in this. The students on record said that the evidence was being deliberately destroyed. Things in RG Medical College were not being handled properly, and there was certainly some problem in this. The most surprising thing was that at the same time, a major case was unfolding, and on the same floor, just 20 meters away from the seminar hall, the management started construction work. The next day, so much pressure was put on the government and Principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh that the principal resigned. However, instead of accepting his resignation, the National College and Hospital in Kolkata, where he was transferred, treated it as a promotion. On one hand, so much had happened, and on the other hand, he was placed in the same position at a better college. The High Court said that since the principal had resigned, there were two options: either you accept it or reject it. Apart from these two, why did you transfer him? The High Court severely reprimanded the government.
Line by line, the court pointed out all the mistakes, and instead of punishing him for the way he handled the situation, he was given a promotion and sent to a better medical college. Along with this, the authority, which should have stood by the victim’s family, did not. After observing all these things, the case of the original petitioner in WPA (P) No 332/2024 was transferred to CBI on August 13. The situation was such that there was a protest under government control, but on the next day, August 14, a student from Presidency College, Rimjhim Sinha, posted on Facebook asking people to gather at 8B bus stand Jadavpur for a peaceful protest under the name “Reclaim the Night” to demand justice for the victim and raise awareness about women’s safety. This protest turned into a significant gathering where a large crowd assembled, and the issue spread from the college to the entire country. It also created significant difficulties for Mamata Banerjee. As the protest was escalating and creating problems for the government, 7 to 8 thousand unknown people began to barricade and break things. They entered the RG Kar Medical College campus, climbing over the walls.they started breaking down MRI machines, CCTV cameras were being destroyed, and the protesters who were there had to flee. The girls inside the hostel were also very disturbed. Now they were thinking what is happening with all this, and also the unknown people who were trying to enter the 3rd floor where the crime took place. The police couldn’t do anything they just went into the toilet instead of taking action. The issue here was that the students who were protesting were causing problems for someone. Who would send them to end the protest? Because of this, things got even worse. The answer should have been given directly by the West Bengal government. Among the crowd, some people were identified, and their photos were published. Some of these people had links to the TMC. The first photo was of Soumik Das, but the TMC later clarified that they had no connection to him, stating that he could be a supporter but had no link with them. The second photo showed Rishikant Mishra, who is also a TMC worker and a building material supplier. Similarly, Shubhodip Kundu and Soumyadip, who were also from the TMC, along with Tulbhi Haldar and others, had their names linked to the TMC. There were many people among the crowd who were linked to the protesters got more angry because It wasn’t just 100-200 people there were several thousand people.
The Troubling History of RG Kar College Unresolved Cases and Allegations
All this has happened the accused was arrested within 24 hours. But why is the protest still ongoing? The case has also been transferred to the CBI. Look, the history of this hospital is such that people, students, and doctors do not want to believe the incident because of the hospital’s past. They say the case is not that simple and there might be a deeper conspiracy, which should be subject to a fair inquiry, which is not happening.
What actually happened was that in the year 2001, a boy named Saumitra Biswas lived in Barrackpore. In August, he told his parents that RG Kar Hospital was not functioning properly and that something illegal was going on there. A few days later, on August 25, 2021, Saumitra Biswas was found hanging. The Kolkata police came, did a bit of investigation, and declared it a suicide. The parents said clearly that their son was happy and that he could not have committed suicide; he was murdered. Saumitra’s parents wrote multiple letters to the government, claiming there was some wrongdoing at RG Kar College. Despite this, nothing happened.
So, the parents went to court, and the court examined everything, starting an investigation by CID if not by CBI. The investigation lasted 2-3 years, during which many friends of Saumitra testified that powerful people in the RG Kar College union were involved in creating pornography. Everyone knew about this but could not do anything because these people were powerful. It was said that they used to bring sex workers from Sonagachi into the college and were made to create pornographic content, which was then sold. Fresh female dead bodies arriving at RG Kar College were used to make films and sell them. It was also mentioned that the faces of college girls were used to make such films because they sold faster. In this case, it was said that a picture of Saumitra Biswas’s girlfriend’s birthday was used to make a film, which was circulated. Saumitra protested this, and his body was found hanging in the same room, Room 15.
During the investigation, a room was found with a tripod, which was very unusual in 2001. Even then, nothing substantial came of it. The case was also connected to other suicide cases. Even today, RG Kar College students want a detailed inquiry into these cases to understand what really happened because this case was also labeled as a suicide.
The history of RG Kar College shows that cases have been labeled as suicides, such as in 2003 when Arjit Dutta’s death shocked everyone, later revealed to be a suicide. Similarly, in 2016, Gautam Pal, the departmental head of RG Kar College, was found dead, also labeled a suicide. In 2020, Poulomi Shah’s case was said to be a suicide, and another intern was reported to have died of an overdose. Everyone wants a detailed inquiry into what is really happening in this college so that such incidents never happen again. The government needs to take strong action.
