“In the year 2023, at this time Sanjay Roy is leading a comfortable life. Meanwhile, the principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, was not having a good time. In June 2023, things had escalated as students and staff began making allegations that the principal was corrupt and involved in financial fraud and even theft of human body parts. The reason behind these allegations was the inquiry report published by Debal Kumar Ghosh, Special Secretary of the Bengal Health Department. In the report, Debal Kumar Ghosh stated that the principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, was involved in illegal activities with contractors, including significant financial misappropriations in the college’s construction and renovation work. An illegal secret agreement was also signed with the contractor for the bidding process. It was also mentioned that the principal was involved in malpractice with biomedical waste. In hospitals, biomedical waste, such as used injections and oxygen masks, should not be disposed of with normal waste because it could have severe consequences for public health. Therefore, there is a separate cell for managing biomedical waste, which ensures that it is collected and handled properly to prevent the spread of diseases like HIV and others. Lalbazar is the headquarters of the Kolkata police. After receiving the complaint, the police called Sanjay Roy and retrieved his call data record (CDR). He was caught because he was truly harassing her; the police had traced all the calls and messages. Sanjay Roy should have faced charges under the Indian Penal Code for harassment and criminal charges, and globally, there would have been many charges against him. In fact, his position as a civic volunteer should have been terminated as well. At RG Medical College, there were about 300-400 resident doctors. The victim, who was pursuing her MD here, was the only daughter of her parents. The entire family was eagerly waiting for her MD to be completed because she was in her second year, and only a little time was left for her to become a doctor.

What happened was that the first week of August had begun, from the 5th of August to the 8th of August, 2024. Sanjay Roy, as a civic assistant, went for some work at Kharagpur Salua and returned on the 8th of August. This was the day when Sanjay Roy was about to commit the biggest crime at RG Medical College Hospital. Sanjay Roy arrived at the hospital early in the morning; he had to admit one patient, who was a civic volunteer and was related to him. After admitting the patient, he was seen wandering around the hospital, following the victim, and then leaving the hospital according to CCTV footage.First, there is some work related to an X-ray, then he arrives at 11 PM and works. The patient’s surgery, which was planned for 1 AM, starts there, and he stays there. The relative of the patient, who was also his friend and a civic volunteer, sits behind the hospital boundary and drinks alcohol. After some time, when they have had enough to drink, they plan to go to Sonagachi, a red-light area, which is a little far from there. After going there, his friend goes inside, and Sanjay waits on the road. While waiting, Sanjay harasses the women outside. Afterward, his friend comes back out from inside, and they both go a little further to another red-light area called Chetla, Again, the friend of this person goes inside, and Sanjay Roy, standing outside, gives money to a girl and gets private photos on his mobile. After a while, his friend returns; the two of them roam around in the same area. After that, his friend books an Uber bike and leaves. Sanjay, who was drunk and in a disturbed state, is now alone. He watches violent adult content on his mobile and drinks more alcohol. After some time, he starts heading towards the hospital; it was around 2 to 2:30 am. The victim, on the other hand, had also arrived at the hospital, where she was working a 36-hour shift with limited breaks, having to work continuously for 36 hours without being able to go home, with all meals being provided at the hospital.”For the last 36 hours, she has been in the hospital,  the victim who was supposed to talk to her parents at 11 PM, felt hungry afterward. The victim colleagues were in her first year they were juniors 2 people were there and they had ordered food from outside. After that, they planned to watch Neeraj Chopra’s Olympics live javelin throw. Their plan was to watch it on the TV in the seminar hall which was there on the 3rd floor. Three people reached the 3rd seminar hall, and three were from the chest medicine department. Afterward, the live match on the TV ended. The two friends left the seminar hall, and the victim stayed there to study. It was around 2 AM in the seminar hall. A staff member went to her and discussed the patient’s treatment, and then left. Until then, everything was fine. After that, at 2:35 AM, the victim received a message from her cousin on her mobile, and the victim replied to her. Then at 3 AM, a staff member passed by the side of the seminar hall, and at that time, the victim was lying on a mattress with a red blanket in the seminar hall, and she was sleeping on top of it.”And there, where the sleep room was, a polysomnography sleep disorder test was going on. Because of this, there was no other place available for her, so she ended up sleeping there. She always carried a diary with her, and she had her diary with her that day as well. She had written in her diary about her future plans, such as achieving a gold medal from college and working at some big hospitals where she had even mentioned her name. At that time, she was sleeping in a similar hall upstairs. The time had already passed 3:50 AM, and by this time, Sanjay Roy had already arrived at the hospital. When checked on CCTV, he was seen entering the hospital through the main gate at this time. And he was searching for his prey throughout the hospital. It wasn’t that he had left. Actually, there were various operation theatres and test departments in the hospital, and he went to check if there was any female patient unconscious. He was actually searching for someone to commit a crime. CCTV footage showed that he was looking in different rooms, and at 4:03 AM, he reached the 3rd floor.

After committing this crime, he left the seminar hall at around 4:40 Am staying in the hall for about 37 minutes. After leaving, he went to the barrack in the hospital where he was assigned and comfortably went to sleep there, showing no signs of tension in his mind.

 

And when it was morning on August 9, 2024, at 6:20 AM, when a staff member from the hospital entered the seminar hall. As soon as he entered, he screamed loudly, and after coming out, he explained the entire situation: the body had half clothes on, injuries on the face, broken glasses, blood coming from the eyes, and injuries all over the body. After learning all this, an hour later, between 6:30 and 7:30 AM, a large crowd gathered in the seminar hall. People wearing shoes entered the crime scene, which caused the situation to deteriorate further. Fingerprints were scattered everywhere. At that time, the highest authority, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who lived nearby, was called. After receiving the call, he arrived at the hospital an hour later. Before filing a police complaint, he himself went to check the seminar hall and criticized it heavily. He should have informed the police about the incident first instead of going to check it himself. After that, about an hour had passed, and the principal arrived at the office and called the police to inform them about the incident. At the same time, the college’s assistant superintendent called the victim’s home around 10:50 AM, and the victim’s mother answered the call. The assistant superintendent said only that your daughter’s condition is bad, and you should come to the college; nothing else was said, and the call was disconnected. After hearing this, the victim’s family called back.

Parents Dispute Suicide Claim, Autopsy Reveals Rape and Murder, and Rush to Cremate Sparks Public Outrage

According to the parents, the assistant superintendent said that their daughter had committed suicide. Hearing this, the family members were shocked and they started running towards the college. At the same time, around 11:30 am, the forensic team of the additional commissioner of police arrived at the crime scene inside the college. All the people created maximum pressure to ensure that everything should get happen in front of the Judicial Magistrate. Because there was previous doubt about what had happened, they insisted that everything should be be happen in front of the Judicial Magistrate. On the same day, at 12 am, the parents reached the college and said they wanted to see their daughter, but they were not allowed to meet her. For 3 hours, they continuously tried to meet their daughter but were not allowed to. They were only allowed to see their daughter once, and at 3:30 am, the parents were shown their daughter. Upon seeing her, the parents said it was not a suicide; they questioned how it could be. This caused the news to spread, and people began gathering in anger, as it was a major incident involving an on-duty doctor. However, at 6 am, the body was sent for autopsy. At that time, the victim’s friend, showing great understanding, said that no autopsy should be conducted without a video recording, and she made this demand.The autopsy that is done due to this is recorded in full on video. In the initial report, when it is mentioned where and how the injuries occurred, everyone understands that this is not a case of suicide but a case of rape and murder. Despite so much time having passed, no FIR has been filed yet. Students reported that the police were acting very quickly; they immediately went to the cremation ground and started the cremation of the body. There were already three bodies in line, but the police removed all of them and started the cremation of the victim’s body. People were angry about why there was such a need to rush.

However, there were cameras in the lobby at the entry and exit of the seminar hall. Now, all these things were going on here, and within the college, the principal said why that the victim had gone alone to the seminar hall?. This made people even angrier, and by August 11, people started protesting on a small scale regarding these issues and also started demanding the principal’s resignation because there must be some link of theirs in this. The students on record said that the evidence was being deliberately destroyed. Things in RG Medical College were not being handled properly, and there was certainly some problem in this. The most surprising thing was that at the same time, a major case was unfolding, and on the same floor, just 20 meters away from the seminar hall, the management started construction work. The next day, so much pressure was put on the government and Principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh that the principal resigned. However, instead of accepting his resignation, the National College and Hospital in Kolkata, where he was transferred, treated it as a promotion. On one hand, so much had happened, and on the other hand, he was placed in the same position at a better college. The High Court said that since the principal had resigned, there were two options: either you accept it or reject it. Apart from these two, why did you transfer him? The High Court severely reprimanded the government.

The situation was such that there was a protest under government control, but on the next day, August 14, a student from Presidency College, Rimjhim Sinha, posted on Facebook asking people to gather at 8B bus stand Jadavpur for a peaceful protest under the name “Reclaim the Night” to demand justice for the victim and raise awareness about women’s safety. This protest turned into a significant gathering where a large crowd assembled, and the issue spread from the college to the entire country. It also created significant difficulties for Mamata Banerjee. As the protest was escalating and creating problems for the government, 7 to 8 thousand unknown people began to barricade and break things. They entered the RG Kar Medical College campus, climbing over the walls.they started breaking down MRI machines, CCTV cameras were being destroyed, and the protesters who were there had to flee. The girls inside the hostel were also very disturbed. Now they were thinking what is happening with all this, and also the unknown people who were trying to enter the 3rd floor where the crime took place. The police couldn’t do anything they just went into the toilet instead of taking action. The issue here was that the students who were protesting were causing problems for someone. Who would send them to end the protest? Because of this, things got even worse. The answer should have been given directly by the West Bengal government. Among the crowd, some people were identified, and their photos were published. Some of these people had links to the TMC. The first photo was of Soumik Das, but the TMC later clarified that they had no connection to him, stating that he could be a supporter but had no link with them. The second photo showed Rishikant Mishra, who is also a TMC worker and a building material supplier. Similarly, Shubhodip Kundu and Soumyadip, who were also from the TMC, along with Tulbhi Haldar and others, had their names linked to the TMC. There were many people among the crowd who were linked to the protesters got more angry because It wasn’t just 100-200 people there were several thousand people.

What actually happened was that in the year 2001, a boy named Saumitra Biswas lived in Barrackpore. In August, he told his parents that RG Kar Hospital was not functioning properly and that something illegal was going on there. A few days later, on August 25, 2021, Saumitra Biswas was found hanging. The Kolkata police came, did a bit of investigation, and declared it a suicide. The parents said clearly that their son was happy and that he could not have committed suicide; he was murdered. Saumitra’s parents wrote multiple letters to the government, claiming there was some wrongdoing at RG Kar College. Despite this, nothing happened.

So, the parents went to court, and the court examined everything, starting an investigation by CID if not by CBI. The investigation lasted 2-3 years, during which many friends of Saumitra testified that powerful people in the RG Kar College union were involved in creating pornography. Everyone knew about this but could not do anything because these people were powerful. It was said that they used to bring sex workers from Sonagachi  into the college and were made to create pornographic content, which was then sold. Fresh female dead bodies arriving at RG Kar College were used to make films and sell them. It was also mentioned that the faces of college girls were used to make such films because they sold faster. In this case, it was said that a picture of Saumitra Biswas’s girlfriend’s birthday was used to make a film, which was circulated. Saumitra protested this, and his body was found hanging in the same room, Room 15.

During the investigation, a room was found with a tripod, which was very unusual in 2001. Even then, nothing substantial came of it. The case was also connected to other suicide cases. Even today, RG Kar College students want a detailed inquiry into these cases to understand what really happened because this case was also labeled as a suicide.
