West Bengal’s Growing Crisis: Opposition Demands President's Rule Over Rising Violence

Opposition Leader Demands President’s Rule Amid Surge in Rape Cases in West Bengal

Suvendu Adhikari Accuses TMC Leaders and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of Failing to Address Rising Violence

In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has called for the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, citing a surge in rape cases and alleged involvement of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders. Adhikari’s demands come in the wake of several high-profile incidents, including a brutal rape case involving a female doctor in Kolkata.

Rising Incidents of Rape

According to Suvendu Adhikari, seven new rape cases have been reported across West Bengal within just two days, including incidents in Cooch Behar, Madhyamgram, Howrah, and Ilambazar. Adhikari claims that these incidents have been linked to TMC leaders, with arrests made involving the husband of a TMC panchayat member in Cooch Behar and a panchayat member in Madhyamgram.

Political Fallout and Allegations

Adhikari has been vocal in his criticism of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of being the “mastermind” behind the spate of violence and demanding her resignation. He asserted, “Mamata Banerjee is at the root of all such rape cases coming in Bengal. She is the real culprit. Mamata Banerjee should resign. The Government of India should impose President’s Rule in Bengal.”

Political and Social Repercussions

The demand for President’s Rule reflects growing frustration among opposition leaders and the public over the handling of violence and crime in the state. The brutal assault on a female doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has further intensified scrutiny and protests led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.

The Kolkata rape case, currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has added to the political turmoil, amplifying calls for accountability and change within the state government.
