Yahya Sinwar Pledges Support for Axis of Resistance Amid Ongoing Conflict with Israel
In a rare communication, Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, has sent a letter to Hezbollah’s chief, Hassan Nasrallah. This letter, shared by Hezbollah on their Telegram channel, underscores Sinwar’s dedication to fighting Israel and backing the Iran-supported alliance known as the “Axis of Resistance.”
Sinwar, who is believed to be hiding underground in Gaza, expressed his commitment to continuing the resistance efforts of his late predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh. He emphasized the importance of the Axis of Resistance and the unity of the Islamic nation against what he described as the Zionist project.
The letter comes in the wake of significant conflict between Hamas and Israel. On October 8, just a day after Hamas-led militants launched an attack on Israel, a large-scale Israeli offensive on Gaza began. Since then, Sinwar has remained largely out of the public eye, making his recent communication notable.
This week, Sinwar issued his first public statement since the outbreak of war, congratulating Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on his election victory. Additionally, Sinwar’s office confirmed he sent letters of thanks to those who offered condolences for Haniyeh’s death. The letter to Nasrallah, dated Friday, further affirms his stance on continuing the fight.
Sinwar, who took over as Hamas’s political leader after Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran in July, is known for his hardline views and strong ties with Iran and Hezbollah. He has vowed to defend Islamic holy sites, particularly Jerusalem’s Al Aqsa Mosque, and is committed to the goal of establishing a sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
In his letter, Sinwar described the October 7 attack as “one of the most honorable battles in the history of our Palestinian people,” reflecting his ongoing resolve in the conflict.
