Get Your Free COVID-19 Test Kits Stay Safe This Holiday Season

Free COVID-19 Test Kits Now Available for U.S. Households

Starting this month, U.S. households can once again order free COVID-19 test kits delivered right to their homes. With the federal program reopening, families can request up to four nasal swab tests through COVIDTests.gov.

While the exact start date for ordering has not been confirmed, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is preparing for increased demand as the holiday season approaches. These tests will help detect current virus strains, providing a crucial resource as gatherings become more common.

In addition to the availability of free tests, regulators have recently approved an updated COVID-19 vaccine designed to target emerging variants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends this fall’s vaccine for everyone aged 6 months and older, aiming to bolster immunity ahead of the winter season.

Although the majority of Americans have some level of immunity from past infections or vaccinations, this protection diminishes over time. Last year’s vaccines were less effective against the current strains, making testing essential for early detection and safety during the holidays.

Latest COVID-19 Trends and New Variants

Despite a recent decline in COVID-19 cases, the CDC has identified a new variant, XEC, which is spreading across nearly two dozen states, including California. As winter approaches, experts anticipate a potential surge, peaking around mid-January.

As of early September, COVID-related hospitalizations had decreased, but vigilance remains crucial, especially for those at higher risk. The CDC advises that at-home tests may yield false negatives with newer variants, underscoring the importance of accurate testing.

Every U.S. household is eligible to receive four at-home COVID-19 tests, and ordering is simple

1. Visit COVIDTests.gov (or go to special.USPS.com/testkits.
