MONTREAL – In a daring move, International captain Mike Weir has made history by sending out the same eight players for the afternoon foursomes at the Presidents Cup, a first in the event’s storied history. Despite a disappointing morning session that saw the Internationals drop the better-ball matches 3-1, Weir is confident in his strategy as his team trails 8-6 overall.
Weir’s decision comes after the quartet of Jason Day, Min Woo Lee, Ben An, and Christiaan Bezuidenhout were left on the sidelines for the entire day. Lee, a first-time captain’s pick, hasn’t seen action since Thursday afternoon, while Day, An, and Bezuidenhout were key players in the team’s unexpected Friday sweep that tied the competition at the halfway point.
“We like the matchups and pairings, and we’re rolling with it,” Weir said, expressing optimism in the face of adversity.
All three Canadian players Taylor Pendrith, Mackenzie Hughes, and Corey Conners will be back in action, despite Pendrith and Hughes struggling statistically in the morning session. Together, they managed just one birdie, underscoring the pressure on the home team to perform in front of their fans at Royal Montreal.
On the other side, U.S. captain Jim Furyk is reusing three of his original foursomes pairings from Friday, introducing only Collin Morikawa and Sam Burns as a new duo. Theegala will sit out the afternoon after a rough outing, while Keegan Bradley, who was strong in the morning but ultimately lost, will also be benched.
As the competition heats up, both captains are leaning heavily on their core players. Furyk will rely on top stars like Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, and Patrick Cantlay, while Weir will focus on Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im, and Adam Scott, along with the Canadian duo of Conners and Pendrith.
With the pressure mounting, the afternoon foursomes promise to be an intense showdown as both teams aim for victory.
