Tragic Loss USF Basketball Coach Amir Abdur-Rahim Passes Away at 43

The University of South Florida (USF) community is mourning the loss of men’s head basketball coach Amir Abdur-Rahim, who died Thursday due to complications from a medical procedure. He was 43 years old and was regarded as a rising star in collegiate coaching.

Abdur-Rahim had an impressive debut season with the Bulls, leading the team to their first-ever regular season American Athletic Conference (AAC) championship with a remarkable 25-8 record, marking the most wins in program history. His leadership propelled the Bulls to their first top 25 ranking, earning him the AAC Coach of the Year award.

“Coach Abdur-Rahim was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation,” said Michael Kelly, USF’s vice president for athletics. “He leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the University, and the community.”

Before joining USF, Abdur-Rahim spent four seasons at Kennesaw State, where he transformed a struggling program. In the 2019-2020 season, the Owls faced challenges, finishing with a 1-28 record. However, under his guidance, the team rebounded, culminating in a successful 2022-2023 season that included a 26-9 record and both Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season and tournament titles. The Owls made their NCAA tournament debut, facing No. 3 seed Xavier in the first round.

USF President Rhea Law praised Abdur-Rahim for his enthusiasm and ability to create unforgettable memories for Bulls fans. “His influence on our student-athletes, coaching staff, and the university community will live on forever,” Law stated.

Abdur-Rahim was one of 13 siblings, with six playing college basketball, including his brother Shareef, a former NBA player and current president of the NBA G-League. Abdur-Rahim expressed gratitude for his upbringing and his late father’s influence. “I just want him to know that he raised a man,” he said, highlighting his commitment to character and community Abdur-Rahim is survived by his wife, Arianne, and their three children.Looking Ahead: USF’s Upcoming Season the USF Bulls are set to open the 2024-2025 regular season against No. 21 Florida in Jacksonville, with their first home game scheduled for November 12 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The university community will honor Abdur-Rahim’s legacy as they continue to build on the foundation he established.
