Chief Minister Accuses CPI(M) and BJP of Political Exploitation
Kolkata, August 15, 2024 – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vehemently defended her government’s actions in the wake of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital. Banerjee has condemned the ongoing protests and accusations leveled against her administration, accusing the CPI(M) and BJP of engaging in political exploitation.
Political Fallout and Protests
On Wednesday, BJP supporters staged a march to protest against the alleged mishandling of the case by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. The demonstration, led by BJP MLA Agnimitra Pal, began at College Square and ended at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the incident occurred. Protesters, many of whom were women, chanted slogans against the TMC government and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Banerjee. They also called for severe punishment for the accused.
Mamata Banerjee’s Response
In a fiery response, Banerjee criticized the opposition for what she described as “cheap politics” and accused them of attempting to destabilize Bengal by turning it into a political battleground. “Instead of supporting the victim’s family, the CPI(M) and BJP are exploiting this tragedy for their own gain. They think they can transform Bengal into Bangladesh, but I will not allow that to happen,” she said.
Government Actions and Assurances
Banerjee emphasized that her government has taken comprehensive steps in handling the case. She highlighted that the police arrested the suspect within 12 hours of the crime and that she personally monitored the situation overnight. Banerjee assured that the rapist would face capital punishment and expressed her commitment to ensuring justice. “I have spoken to the police commissioner and the victim’s parents. The government will cooperate fully with the CBI investigation, and we will not rest until justice is served,” she stated.
Appeal for Resolution
The Chief Minister urged the protesting doctors to resume their duties and appealed for calm. She reiterated her government’s commitment to resolving the case swiftly and expressed frustration at the politicization of a serious issue. Banerjee’s comments underscore her determination to address the tragedy while navigating the complex political landscape.
