American Cyclist Lael Wilcox Sets New World Record for Fastest Global Ride

American Cyclist Lael Wilcox Breaks World Record for Fastest Circumference of the Globe

Historic Achievement Wilcox Completes Round-the-World Ride in Record Time American cyclist Lael Wilcox has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new world record for the fastest time to cycle around the globe. Over 108 days, 12 hours, and 12 minutes, Wilcox traveled through 21 countries and covered a distance of 18,125 miles. She returned to Chicago at 9 p.m. local time on Wednesday, surpassing the previous record of 124 days and 11 hours held by Scottish cyclist Jenny Graham since 2018.

An Unstoppable Journey From Chicago to the World

The 38-year-old Alaskan, known for her expertise in ultra-endurance cycling, embarked on her epic journey from Chicago. Her route took her to New York City before flying to Portugal and cycling through the Netherlands, Germany, the Alps, the Balkans, Turkey, and Georgia. Wilcox continued her adventure with a flight to Perth, Australia, and then cycled along the southern coast to Brisbane. She then flew to New Zealand, which was her last stop before returning to North America. Wilcox concluded her record-setting ride with a journey from Anchorage to Los Angeles, finishing along the historic Route 66 back to Chicago.

Throughout her trip, Wilcox faced numerous challenges, including severe weather and mechanical issues. On her fourth day, she experienced extreme difficulties with illness, constant rain, and multiple flat tires but still managed to ride 139 miles. Despite these obstacles, Wilcox’s determination never wavered.

As Wilcox approached the finish line, she expressed her gratitude to the supporters who cheered her on throughout her journey. “”At times, it feels like I’m just on an incredibly fun group ride rather than cycling around the entire world.”

The signs, the cheering, and the jumping up and down on the side of the road mean the world to me,” she shared on Instagram, managed by her wife, filmmaker Rugile Kaladyte.

Future Records A New Challenge on the Horizon

Although Wilcox’s record is newly set, it may soon face competition. Indian cyclist Vedangi Kulkarni is currently about 4,800 miles into her own attempt, aiming to achieve a similar feat.

Lael Wilcox’s extraordinary accomplishment highlights the spirit of adventure and resilience, setting a new benchmark in the world of endurance cycling.
