B-Girl Raygun Australia's Top Breaker Takes the World Stage

Australian Breaker Rachael Gunn Tops World Rankings Despite Olympic Challenges

Rachael Gunn, known in the dance world as B-Girl Raygun, has been named the top breaker globally, according to the latest rankings by the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF). The 37-year-old Australian dancer achieved this position after an impressive performance at the 2023 WDSF Oceania Championships, despite facing challenges at the Paris Olympics.

At the Paris Games, Raygun struggled, losing all her rounds with a score of 18-0 against breakers from the United States, France, and Lithuania. Nevertheless, her victory at the Oceania Championships earned her 1,000 ranking points, propelling her to the top of the global rankings. She is currently tied with Japan’s B-Girl Riko, who holds the second position.

Interestingly, none of the Olympic medalists Japan’s Ami, Lithuania’s Nicka, and China’s 671 are ranked in the top 10. The WDSF clarified that its rankings are based on the top four performances of the past 12 months, and points from recent Olympic events in Shanghai, Budapest, and Paris did not count due to limited quotas and scheduling adjustments.

The WDSF explained that no ranking events were held between December 31, 2023, and the Paris Games to allow athletes to focus on Olympic qualification. As a result, many athletes’ rankings are based on limited competition results. The rankings are expected to change once new points are added from upcoming events like the Breaking for Gold World Series in Shanghai this October.

Public Reaction and Media Attention

Raygun gained global attention with her distinctive routine at the Olympics, featuring moves like the kangaroo hop and a backward roll. Despite receiving mixed reviews, including criticism from some online users and celebrities, she has been defended by figures within the breaking community. Martin Gilian, chief breaking judge at the Olympics, praised her originality and dedication to the sport.

Raygun’s Perspective and Future Plans

Raygun, who is also a university lecturer, acknowledged the backlash but remains positive. She expressed her commitment to focusing on the joy and creativity she brought to her performances. Despite the criticism, she values the support she has received and remains enthusiastic about her future in breaking.

Breaking made its debut at the Paris 2024 Games but will not be featured in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Raygun’s journey reflects both the challenges and triumphs of competing at the highest level in the world of dance.
