Inside Verizon's Secret Network Hub How Your Calls Stay Connected

Behind the Scenes How Verizon Keeps Your Calls Connected

Inside the Hidden Heart of Verizon’s Network when you make a phone call, it often ends up at a secretive, single-story brick building. This building, surrounded by a tall fence, is the central hub of Verizon’s network a place they prefer you don’t know about.

Dave Nelson is the person in charge of keeping this crucial facility running smoothly. His job is to ensure it stays operational, even in the face of severe weather or potential threats. “This facility is vital for all our communication,” Nelson explains.

Inside this secure building, there are numerous layers of backups to keep everything working perfectly Power Supply The building doesn’t just rely on regular power from the street. It has two enormous diesel generators that provide more power than needed, plus a room full of batteries to keep everything running while the generators start up.

Cooling Systems: To manage the heat generated by all the equipment, there are cooling systems, backup cooling systems, and even portable cooling units. This ensures the equipment doesn’t overheat.

Storm and Power Surge Protection: The building is designed to withstand severe Arizona storms, power surges, and lightning strikes. For added protection, the window bars are grounded to prevent lightning damage.

Emergency Response Verizon’s Mobile Units

In the parking lot, there are trailers equipped with communications gear and satellite dishes, collectively known as “The Barnyard”

COLT (Cell On a Light Truck) and COW (Cell On Wheels): These are mobile cell towers that can be deployed in emergencies, like wildfires or big events.

STEER (Specialized Equipment for Emergency Response): Another trailer type for expanding network coverage as needed.

These mobile units help maintain service during disasters, major events like the Super Bowl, or in remote areas where additional network support is needed.

A Backup for the Backup

To ensure even more reliability, Verizon has a duplicate of this secret building in another state. If anything were to happen to the original facility, this backup would handle all of Arizona’s network traffic.

By preparing for every possible scenario, Verizon ensures that your calls and messages remain connected, no matter what happens.
