Global Leaders Unite Biden and Modi Call for Greater Protection of Minorities in Bangladesh

Biden and Modi Discuss Concerns Over Minority Safety and Democratic Stability in Bangladesh

US President and Indian Prime Minister Highlight Issues Affecting Hindus and Democratic Institutions

Washington, September 5, 2024 — In a recent phone call between US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, significant concerns were raised about the situation in Bangladesh, focusing particularly on the safety of minorities and the future of democratic institutions in the country.

Safety of Minorities Under Scrutiny

During the conversation on August 26, President Biden and Prime Minister Modi expressed deep apprehension about the current conditions in Bangladesh. The discussion centered on the need for enhanced protection of minority communities, especially Hindus, who have been facing increased risks. Biden’s concerns about the deteriorating situation were highlighted by White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby, who emphasized the need for urgent attention to these issues.

Restoration of Law and Order Emphasized

Both leaders underscored the importance of restoring law and order in Bangladesh. Modi’s social media post and a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) revealed that the discussion also covered strategies for re-establishing normalcy and ensuring the safety of vulnerable populations. The PMO noted that Biden and Modi were aligned in their concerns and called for concrete measures to address the instability affecting the country.

Bangladesh Government’s Response

In response to the international concerns, the interim government of Bangladesh has pledged to take stringent legal action against individuals and groups that contribute to unrest. The Home Ministry issued a circular warning against activities such as forced resignations, vandalism, arson, illegal searches, and extortion, which have been attributed to individuals seeking personal gain.

The global attention on Bangladesh’s situation highlights the pressing need for a balanced approach to ensure both national stability and the protection of minority rights.
