Brazil’s Tough Defeat Against Paraguay In a disappointing turn of events, Brazil’s national soccer team lost 1-0 to Paraguay in their World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday. This defeat marks Brazil’s fourth loss in their last five qualifying games. The setback leaves Brazil in fifth place, and only the top six teams will secure automatic spots in the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The match’s lone goal came from Paraguay’s Diego Gómez, who scored with a remarkable shot that hit the post. Brazil struggled to capitalize on their chances, despite controlling 71% of possession. The team managed only three shots on target, with Vinícius Jr. missing two close opportunities that were saved by Paraguayan goalkeeper Gatito Fernández.
Brazil’s form has been inconsistent, continuing their slump since being knocked out of the Copa América by Uruguay earlier this year. Coach Dorival Júnior is still searching for the best team setup. Defender Marquinhos commented, “We’re in a transition period, and we need to work hard to improve our performance.”
Meanwhile, Argentina suffered a 2-1 defeat against Colombia but remains at the top of the standings. James Rodríguez was pivotal for Colombia, providing the assist for Yerson Mosquera’s header and scoring a crucial penalty in the second half.
Nicolás González had initially equalized for Argentina after halftime, but a VAR-reviewed penalty awarded to Colombia allowed Rodríguez to score and secure the win. Argentina continues to miss star player Lionel Messi, who is recovering from an ankle injury sustained in the Copa América final. Coach Lionel Scaloni is hopeful that Messi will return for the next round of qualifiers in October.
Despite this loss, Argentina holds a strong position with six wins from eight games, leading by two points over Colombia, who are unbeaten with four wins and four draws.
