Rouse Avenue Court Extends Custody Until August 27 Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been detained in connection with the Delhi liquor scam, did not receive any relief from the Rouse Avenue Court today. The court has extended his judicial custody until August 27.
Kejriwal appeared in court via video conferencing. His judicial custody was previously extended until August 20, following his initial appearance on August 8. Arrested by the CBI on June 26, Kejriwal was first held in CBI custody before being moved to judicial custody. The ongoing investigation pertains to alleged corruption in the liquor distribution sector.
Background of the Case
In November 2021, the Delhi government introduced a new excise policy that significantly reduced liquor prices and permitted retailers to offer discounts. This policy led to the opening of approximately 650 new liquor shops in the city, with promotions such as “buy one, get one free” on select brands.
The policy soon became controversial, with allegations surfacing about irregularities in the issuance of liquor licenses. It was claimed that certain dealers were favored and had paid bribes for these licenses. In response to these allegations, the Lieutenant Governor recommended a probe, which led to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) taking up the case. Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a separate investigation under money laundering charges.
The investigation continues as authorities scrutinize the extent of the alleged corruption and its implications for Kejriwal and his administration.
