Assam Government Abolishes 2-Hour Break for Friday Prayers
In a landmark decision, the Assam government has abolished the long-standing tradition of a two-hour break for Friday prayers in the Assam Legislative Assembly. This rule, which had been in place since 1937, was originally established by Muhammad Syed Saadulla, a key figure in Assam’s political history.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Statement
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the decision as historic, emphasizing that it prioritizes productivity and removes a vestige of colonialism. Sarma expressed gratitude to Speaker Biswajit Daimary and the MLAs for their support in this significant change.
Background of the Break
Until now, Muslim MLAs in the Assam Legislative Assembly were granted a two-hour break from 12 noon to 2 pm on Fridays to perform namaz. This practice, which began in 1937, was introduced by Muhammad Syed Saadulla, who was then a prominent leader of the Muslim League.
Who Was Syed Saadulla?
Muhammad Syed Saadulla was a distinguished lawyer and politician who played a pivotal role in Assam’s political landscape. Knighted by the British government in 1928, Saadulla became the first Chief Minister of Assam in 1936 after forming a coalition with non-Congress parties. Although he resigned in 1938 following a no-confidence motion, his influence remained significant.
Saadulla was also a member of the Constituent Assembly and one of the 28 Muslim League representatives involved in drafting the Indian Constitution. He advocated for the inclusion of Assam in Pakistan during the 1947 partition discussions but ultimately stayed in Assam when it opted to join India.
Despite his initial support for Pakistan, Saadulla’s decision to remain in Assam after the partition highlighted his complex legacy. His historical impact continues to resonate, as demonstrated by the recent changes in the Assam Legislative Assembly’s procedures.
With the abolition of the Friday prayer break, the Assam government aims to enhance legislative efficiency while acknowledging the historical context of the decision.
