Prime Minister Modi's First Visit to Ukraine in Over 30 Years"

Historic Visit Indian Prime Minister Modi Set to Visit Ukraine for the First Time in Over 30 Years

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Kyiv on August 23, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has traveled to Ukraine in over three decades. This visit underscores the strengthening of high-level contacts between India and Ukraine, following the establishment of diplomatic relations more than 30 years ago.

Strengthening Relations and Addressing the Conflict

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss a range of issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Foreign Ministry Secretary (West) Tanmay Lal emphasized that India has consistently advocated for diplomacy and dialogue as the means to resolve the conflict. Lal stated that India is prepared to contribute to a peaceful resolution and that the conflict will be a key topic in discussions.

Balanced Partnerships

Lal reiterated that India maintains independent relations with both Russia and Ukraine, and these relationships are not influenced by the other. He highlighted that Modi’s visit aims to advance engagement between the two countries, not to benefit from the other’s losses. The visit follows Modi’s recent interactions with President Zelensky, including meetings on the sidelines of the G7 summit in June.

Focus on Comprehensive Relations

The discussions between Modi and Zelensky are expected to cover a broad spectrum of topics including agriculture, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, health, education, defense, and people-to-people ties. Lal noted that India’s approach remains focused on achieving a peaceful resolution through dialogue, aligning with the views of many countries.

Commitment to Peace

Lal reaffirmed India’s commitment to diplomacy and a human-centric approach to resolving the conflict, echoing Prime Minister Modi’s stance that war is not a viable solution. The visit highlights India’s ongoing dedication to a peaceful resolution and strengthening bilateral relations with Ukraine.
