“Shōgun” Makes Emmy History as First Non-English Drama Winner
In a groundbreaking achievement, “Shōgun” has become the first non-English language series to win the Emmy for Best Drama. The historical epic, based on the 1975 novel, earned four awards during the ceremony, including Best Actor and Best Actress for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. Sanada and Sawai are the first Japanese actors to receive these awards.Sanada shared his thoughts on the win, saying, “When people work together, we can make miracles and create a better future.”
Earlier this month, “Shōgun” also made history at the Creative Arts Emmys, where it won a record 14 awards in one night. This is the highest number of awards won by a series in a single year.
The Emmys, held this year after last year’s ceremony was postponed due to Hollywood strikes, also saw “Hacks” winning Best Comedy Series, surpassing “The Bear” and “Abbott Elementary.” Jean Smart, who stars in “Hacks,” won Best Actress in a Comedy Series for the third time. “The Bear” won four Emmys, including acting awards for Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colón-Zayas. Colón-Zayas, who defeated Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett, gave an emotional speech urging Latinas to keep believing and advocating for their rights.
Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” won four awards, including Best Limited or Anthology Series, with Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning also receiving acting awards. Gadd spoke about overcoming personal challenges and the importance of taking risks in television.
Jodie Foster won Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series for “True Detective: Night Country,” her first Emmy. Elizabeth Debicki won Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “The Crown.” Billy Crudup was named Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for “The Morning Show,” while Will Smith from “Slow Horses” won for writing.
“The Traitors” won Best Reality Competition Program, beating “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Alan Cumming was named Best Host at the Creative Arts Emmys.Shows that did not win any awards included “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Fallout,” and “Abbott Elementary.”
The night featured reunions of cast members from shows like “Happy Days,” “Saturday Night Live,” and “The West Wing.” Dan Levy humorously remarked about the Emmys being “broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services.”
John Leguizamo addressed the lack of diversity in the TV industry, praising the diverse nominees this year but calling for continued progress.
