U.S., Britain, and European Allies to Impose Sanctions on Iran Following Missiles Shipment to Russia
Iran has sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia, escalating the conflict in Ukraine. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced this development on Tuesday, highlighting that these missiles will allow Russia to strike deeper into Ukrainian territory.
In response, the U.S., Britain, and other European countries are planning to impose new sanctions on Iran. These measures will target Iran Air, the state-owned airline, which is believed to be involved in the missile transfer.
According to Blinken, Russia has received these missiles and is expected to use them within weeks. This move allows Russia to reserve its own missiles for longer-range attacks while using the new Iranian missiles for closer targets.
Iran’s Role and International Reaction
Iran has previously provided drones to Russia and assisted in setting up drone manufacturing in Russia. The U.S. has warned Iran that supplying these missiles constitutes a significant escalation in the conflict.
The news of Iran arming Russia is likely to intensify pressure on the Biden administration to give Ukraine more freedom to strike targets within Russia. Kyiv has been seeking more support to target Russian missile launchers deeper inside Russia.
Iran denies supplying missiles to Russia and has called for a halt to all weapon shipments in the conflict. Russia also downplayed the reports, emphasizing ongoing dialogue with Iran.
British Foreign Secretary David Lamy condemned the increased Iranian support for Russia, stressing the need for accountability. As tensions rise, the international community is closely monitoring the situation and preparing further actions against Tehran.
