Jay Shah Youngest ICC Chairman in History, Ushering in a New Era for Cricket

Jay Shah Elected ICC Chairman A Historic Milestone for Indian Cricket

BCCI Secretary to Assume Role as Youngest ICC Chairman

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah has made history by being elected the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah, who will assume office on December 1, 2024, has become the youngest individual to hold this prestigious position, at the age of 35. His tenure will extend until September 2025.

On Tuesday, Shah was elected unopposed as the independent chairman. The election, largely a formality, saw Shah garner significant support from ICC members, including key endorsements from the cricket boards of Australia and England. Out of 16 total members, Shah needed 9 votes to secure the role, and his victory was almost assured once nominations were filed.

Greg Barclay to Step Down

Shah’s appointment comes as current ICC Chairman Greg Barclay announced on August 20 that he would not seek a third term. Barclay will officially step down in November, paving the way for Shah’s ascent to the role.

A Historic Achievement for Indian Cricket

Shah’s election marks a significant moment in cricket history. He is the fifth Indian to lead the ICC, following in the footsteps of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. His appointment underscores India’s growing influence in international cricket.

Vacancy for BCCI Secretary

With Shah’s elevation to ICC Chairman, the position of BCCI Secretary will become vacant. Rohan Jaitley, President of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) and son of the late BJP leader Arun Jaitley, is a prominent name being discussed as a potential successor. However, Rohan Jaitley has dismissed these speculations, leaving the position open for further developments.

This transition marks a new chapter in the leadership of global cricket and highlights India’s prominent role in shaping the future of the sport.
