Kangana Ranaut's Controversial Comments on Farmers' Protest Ignite Political Controversy

Congress Demands FIR and NSA Action; BJP Disassociates from MP’s Statements

In a recent interview, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut made provocative statements about the farmers’ protest, suggesting that if India’s leadership had been weaker, the country could have faced a situation akin to Bangladesh. Ranaut, who represents the Mandi Lok Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh, claimed that the protest involved widespread violence, including rapes and murders, disguised as activism. She defended the Central Government’s decision to withdraw the agricultural laws, stating that it had shocked the so-called rioters, who had a long-term plan.

Political Backlash

Ranaut’s comments have sparked a strong reaction from various political figures. Congress leader Raj Kumar Verka has called for an FIR to be filed against her and for action under the National Security Act (NSA), accusing her of defaming Punjab and its farmers. Verka has urged the Chief Minister of Punjab to ensure that Ranaut faces legal consequences, including potential detention.

BJP’s Disassociation

In response to the controversy, the BJP has distanced itself from Ranaut’s statements. Punjab BJP leader Harjeet Singh Grewal described her remarks as personal opinions rather than official party positions. Grewal emphasized that the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are supportive of farmers and suggested that Ranaut should retract her comments.

Ongoing Sensitivity

The incident underscores the ongoing sensitivity surrounding the farmers’ protests and the broader political discourse on agricultural policy in India.
