In a stunning display of skill and power, Khamzat Chimaev claimed his eighth victory in the UFC by stopping former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in the first round at UFC 308. The fight ended with a neck crank that left Whittaker with a shattered jaw and damaged teeth a consequence that Chimaev did not anticipate until after the match.
“I felt something was wrong with his chin when I pushed it,” Chimaev admitted during the post-fight press conference. “I feel bad for that. I didn’t mean to break somebody’s chin, but it’s my job to cause pain and bring happiness to my family.”
This decisive win marked Chimaev’s sixth finish in the UFC, also earning him his fifth Performance of the Night bonus. With this performance, the prospect of a title shot looms large. Although Sean Strickland seems to be next in line for champion Dricus du Plessis, UFC CEO Dana White hinted that the hierarchy may be shifting in Chimaev’s favor.
“I’m ready to face du Plessis on his home turf in South Africa if it’s for the belt,” Chimaev stated confidently. “It’s up to Dana, but I think it would be a great historical moment for the UFC.”
For Chimaev, capturing the title is just the beginning. “I’ve talked about wanting three belts for a long time,” he remarked. “First, I have to win in my weight class, and then I’ll think about moving up.”
As the UFC landscape continues to evolve, Khamzat Chimaev stands poised to make history. With his sights set on championship glory, fans can expect to see more of his relentless pursuit in the octagon.
