New Rates Effective from September 1 On Wednesday, Mizoram Taxation Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana announced that the state government has increased the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 4 per liter. This adjustment, which came into effect on September 1, aims to raise funds for social infrastructure and road maintenance.
Details of the Price Hike
Dr. Vanlalthlana explained that the price increase includes a new charge of Rs 2 per liter on both diesel and petrol for social infrastructure and service cess, and an additional Rs 2 per liter for road maintenance. The minister stated that this decision is intended for the benefit and welfare of the people.
Current Prices Compared to 2021
Despite the Rs 4 per liter increase and the recent rise in VAT charges, Dr. Vanlalthlana noted that the current prices of petrol and diesel are still lower than those in 2021. The Mizoram government had recently issued a notification to raise VAT on petrol from 5.23% to 10% and on diesel from 16.36% to 18%. The new prices are Rs 99.24 per liter for petrol and Rs 88.02 per liter for diesel. Before this hike, the price of petrol was Rs 93.93 per liter and diesel was Rs 82.62 per liter.
Political Context
The state, governed by the Zoram People’s Movement party, implemented this decision following the assembly elections held last year. The government asserts that this policy shift is designed to benefit and enhance the welfare of Mizoram’s residents.
