Edward Caban is stepping down from his role as the Commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD). Mayor Eric Adams revealed Caban’s decision during a press briefing on Thursday. Caban’s resignation will officially take effect at 5 p.m. on Friday.
Caban’s resignation comes in response to recent events that have affected the NYPD. Federal investigators visited Caban’s home, confiscating his phones and electronic devices from several NYPD executives. Caban stated in his resignation letter that these developments were distracting and that he wanted to focus solely on the safety and work of the NYPD. He decided to resign to avoid further distraction for the department and the city.
According to Caban’s lawyers, Russell Capone and Rebekah Donaleski, Caban is not a target of the ongoing federal investigation led by the Southern District of New York. They also mentioned that Caban intends to fully cooperate with the investigation. The probe, which involves the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the IRS, might also examine Caban’s twin brother, James Caban. James is a consultant for the nightlife industry, and there are concerns about whether he may have used his brother’s position to benefit certain nightclubs.
In light of Caban’s departure, Mayor Adams has appointed Tom Donlon as the interim NYPD Commissioner. Donlon, a retired FBI official who once led the FBI’s National Threat Center and the Office of Homeland Security in New York, will temporarily oversee the department. Donlon has committed to continuing the fight against crime, maintaining transparency, and supporting NYPD officers during this transitional period.
Achievements Under Caban’s Leadership
During his time as Commissioner, Caban achieved significant results. Under his leadership, the NYPD removed more than 18,000 illegal guns from the streets. The city experienced a decrease in crime rates, with record lows in robberies and shootings. Caban was appointed by Mayor Adams in July 2023 and made history as the first Latino to hold the position of NYPD Commissioner.
