President Joe Biden marked the annual Diwali celebration at the White House, emphasizing the importance of this festival and the contributions of the South Asian American community. “It is an honor for me to host the Diwali program at the White House,” he stated, reflecting on the significance of the occasion.
The event attracted over 600 guests, including notable figures such as Congress MP Shri Thanedar, US Surgeon General Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, and Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. Additionally, NASA astronaut Sunita Williams sent a recorded message from the International Space Station, highlighting her connection to the celebration.
In his remarks, President Biden praised the diversity within his administration, citing the presence of prominent figures like Vice President Kamala Harris and Dr. Murthy as examples of “unity in diversity.” Although both the Vice President and First Lady Jill Biden were unable to attend due to prior commitments, Biden expressed their desire to celebrate with the community.
Acknowledging Community Contributions
Biden noted that the South Asian American community has greatly enriched various aspects of American life, calling it one of the fastest-growing and most active communities in the country. As part of the celebration, he lit a diya, symbolizing hope and unity.
The tradition of celebrating Diwali at the White House began in 2003 under President George W. Bush. However, it was President Barack Obama who first attended the celebration in 2009, lighting diyas as part of the festivities. President Trump continued the tradition, and last year, Biden and Jill Biden hosted the largest Diwali event to date, inviting over 200 guests.
The enthusiasm for Diwali extended beyond the White House, with celebrations occurring from New York to San Francisco, and across Ohio, New Jersey, and California. Hindu temples held worship ceremonies, and community members gathered to chant mantras, showcasing the vibrant cultural tapestry of Indian immigrants in America.
President Biden’s Diwali celebration at the White House serves as a reminder of the enduring bonds of community and culture that enrich the American experience.
