In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Rafael Nadal has announced his retirement from professional tennis. The 38-year-old Spanish superstar will play his final match at the upcoming Davis Cup tournament, set to take place in November in Spain.
Nadal expressed his gratitude to fans in a video, stating, “I am retiring from professional tennis. The last few years have been very difficult, especially the last two. This is a very tough decision, but everything in life has a beginning and an end.” The knockout rounds of the Davis Cup are scheduled between November 19 and 24, marking the end of an illustrious career.
Battling Through Injuries
Throughout his career, Nadal has faced numerous injuries, suffering from major setbacks approximately every two to three years. In total, he encountered 16 significant injuries, which tested his resilience. Notably, he missed the 2023 French Open due to injury and faced early elimination in 2024. His last French Open victory came in 2022.
From the beginning of his career, injuries plagued him; at just 16 years old, he had to withdraw from the 2003 French Open due to an elbow injury. Over the years, he has battled various injuries, including stress fractures and knee issues, yet he continued to excel on the court.
A Legacy of Titles
Nadal’s career is adorned with remarkable achievements, including 92 ATP singles titles, 36 Masters titles, and an Olympic gold medal. He is renowned as the “King of Clay,” having claimed the French Open title 14 times, with an impressive record of 112 wins out of 116 matches on the surface.
In addition to his dominance at the French Open, Nadal has secured two Australian Open titles, two Wimbledon titles, and four US Open titles. He also won gold in singles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a gold medal in men’s doubles at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Nadal has helped Spain secure the Davis Cup title four times.
