In a heartbreaking announcement, Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat revealed that Cassius, a 5.48-meter (18 ft) Australian crocodile and the world’s largest crocodile in captivity, has passed away. Believed to be over 110 years old, Cassius had been in declining health since October 15. His passing marks the end of an era for the sanctuary based on Green Island, near the Queensland tourist town of Cairns.
A Symbol of Wildlife Conservation
Cassius, weighing over one ton, was a saltwater crocodile renowned not just for his size but also for his role in wildlife tourism. Since his arrival at the sanctuary in 1987, after being relocated from the Northern Territory, Cassius became a beloved figure among visitors and staff alike. “He was very old and believed to be living beyond the years of a wild croc,” stated the sanctuary in a heartfelt Facebook post.
Cherished Memories
The sanctuary expressed its deep sorrow over Cassius’s death, stating, “Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.” His life and presence provided countless educational opportunities about crocodiles and conservation efforts in Australia.
Record-Breaking Legacy
Cassius officially held the Guinness World Records title for the largest crocodile in captivity, taking over the record after the passing of the Philippines’ Lolong in 2013, who measured 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in). Cassius’s legacy as an iconic symbol of wildlife will continue to inspire future generations.
