Kathryn Crosby, the talented actress known for her roles in classic films such as The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Anatomy of a Murder, and Operation Mad Ball, has passed away at the age of 90. She died of natural causes on Friday night at her home in Hillsborough, Northern California, as confirmed by a family spokesperson.
Born Olive Kathryn Grandstaff on November 25, 1933, in West Columbia, Texas, Kathryn graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in fine arts. She made her Hollywood debut in 1953 and quickly became a familiar face on the big screen. Under her stage name, Kathryn Grant, she starred alongside notable actors such as Tony Curtis in Mister Cory (1957) and Victor Mature in The Big Circus (1959).
Kathryn had a fruitful partnership with film noir director Phil Karlson, appearing in five of his films, including Tight Spot and The Phenix City Story (both 1955). Her impressive filmography also includes memorable performances with legendary actors like Jack Lemmon, James Darren, and James Stewart.
Kathryn’s life took a significant turn when she met Bing Crosby while interviewing him for a column she wrote for her hometown newspaper. The couple married in 1957, when Kathryn was just 23 and Bing was 54. Following their marriage, she chose to scale back her acting career but remained a beloved figure, often appearing with Bing and their three children on his Christmas specials and in iconic Minute Maid commercials.
In 1963, Kathryn pursued a career in nursing, demonstrating her commitment to helping others. She later hosted a morning talk show on KPIX-TV in Northern California during the 1970s.
Bing Crosby passed away in 1977, leaving a significant void in Kathryn’s life. She continued to honor his memory by participating in stage productions such as Same Time, Next Year and Charley’s Aunt, and co-starring in the 1996 Broadway revival of State Fair alongside John Davidson and Andrea McArdle.
For 16 years, Kathryn hosted the Crosby National Golf Tournament in Bermuda Run, North Carolina, solidifying her connection to Bing’s legacy.
Kathryn is survived by her three children: Harry, Mary who gained fame as an actor on the TV show Dallas and Nathaniel, a successful amateur golfer. She was married to Maurice Sullivan for ten years before his tragic death in a 2010 car accident, which also left Kathryn seriously injured.
Kathryn Crosby’s remarkable life was defined by her contributions to film, her dedication to family, and her enduring spirit. She will be remembered not only for her talent but also for the love and warmth she brought to those around her.
