Russia Imposes Astronomical Fine of 2.5 Decillion Dollars on Google

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Google has escalated dramatically, with the Russian government imposing an unprecedented fine of 2 undecillion rubles equivalent to approximately 2.5 decillion dollars. This staggering amount far exceeds the total wealth of the Earth and highlights the deepening tensions between the tech giant and the Russian state.

The dispute originated four years ago when Google began banning YouTube channels associated with pro-Kremlin and government media outlets, including Tsargrad TV and RIA Fan. These actions were taken in response to violations of local laws and business regulations. Following these bans, a Moscow court reprimanded Google, mandating the restoration of the affected accounts and imposing daily fines of 100,000 rubles until compliance was achieved.

The situation intensified after the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, when Google expanded its bans to include additional Russian media outlets such as Russia 24, NTV, and RT. This led to 17 Russian television channels filing lawsuits against Google. The mounting legal challenges and fines prompted Google to apply for bankruptcy in Russia, citing debts exceeding 19 billion rubles against assets of only 3.5 billion rubles.

In response to the deteriorating situation, Google has taken significant steps to restrict services in Russia. These include banning the creation of new accounts for users within the country and deactivating AdSense accounts for Russian residents, further straining relations between the tech company and the Russian government.
