What You Need to Know About September’s SSI Payment Shift

September’s SSI Payment Delay Explained What Beneficiaries Should Know

Why No SSI Check This September?

Some Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients might have noticed an unusual shift in the payment schedule this month. Normally, SSI payments are made on the first business day of each month. However, because September 1 fell on a Sunday, this month’s SSI payment was distributed early on Friday, August 30. Consequently, there will be no SSI check in September, with the next payment scheduled for October 1.

This scheduling change is similar to what occurred in June, when the payment was made on Friday, May 31, due to June 1 falling on a Saturday. The subsequent payment was then made on July 1.

What is SSI?

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is distinct from Social Security retirement benefits. While Social Security benefits are funded primarily by income taxes, SSI is financed by the U.S. Treasury and state-level supplements. SSI supports individuals with limited income who are elderly, blind, or disabled, without requiring a work history.

In 2024, the maximum SSI benefit is $943 per month for individuals and $1,415 for couples where both qualify.

Social Security Payment Schedule for September

Social Security retirement payments will proceed as usual this month
– September 11: Birth dates from the 1st to the 10th.
– September 18: Birth dates from the 11th to the 20th.
– September 25: Birth dates from the 21st to the 31st.

Upcoming Changes Simplified SSI Applications

In a move to streamline the application process, the SSA will roll out a new online system called iClaim later this year. This system will feature simplified, plain-language questions to expedite the SSI application process for both applicants and SSA claims processors. The new system will be available starting in December for first-time applicants between the ages of 18 and 65 who are applying concurrently for Social Security benefits and SSI.

Plan Ahead with SSA’s Payment Schedules

The SSA provides annual payment schedules well in advance. You can begin planning for 2025 now by referring to the already-released 2025 calendar. Despite this month’s adjustment, recipients of Social Security retirement benefits and SSI should stay informed and adjust their financial plans accordingly.
