Sri Lanka Triumphs Over India in ODI Series for the First Time in 27 Years

The Sri Lankan cricket team clinched a historic victory in the ODI series against India, winning 2-0 after a gap of 27 years. The third and final ODI, played on Wednesday, saw Sri Lanka defeat India by 110 runs. With this win, Sri Lanka has achieved its first ODI series victory over India since 1997.

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first, setting a target of 249 runs by scoring 248 for 7 in 50 overs. Avishka Fernando was the standout performer with 96 runs off 102 balls, supported by Kusal Mendis who contributed 59 runs. In a dominant bowling performance, spinner Dunith Wellalage took 5 wickets for 27 runs in 5.1 overs, while Maheesh Theekshna and Jeffrey Vandersay each claimed two wickets.

In response, India was dismissed for just 138 runs in 26.1 overs. Captain Rohit Sharma was the top scorer for India with 35 runs, followed by Washington Sundar with 30 and Virat Kohli with 20. Despite the efforts, India’s batting struggled against sri Lanka’s spin attack.

Reflecting on the series, Indian captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged the team’s mistakes and admitted that the Sri Lankan side outplayed them. He dismissed suggestions of complacency after India’s T20 World Cup win, stating, “When you play for India, there is no question of being careless. We have to give credit where it is due.”

The series saw a tied first match, followed by Sri Lanka’s victories in the remaining two, marking a significant achievement for Sri Lankan cricket.
