Ceremony Celebrates Key Date in State’s History
On Wednesday, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy officially laid the foundation stone for the much-anticipated statue of ‘Telangana Thalli’ (Mother) at the state Secretariat complex. The unveiling of the statue is set for December 9, 2024, a date steeped in historical significance for the state.
Chief Minister Reddy underscored the importance of December 9 for Telangana. The date commemorates the 2009 announcement by then Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, which marked the beginning of the process to create Telangana. Additionally, it coincides with the birthday of Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who was instrumental in fulfilling the long-standing demand for a separate state. Reddy described December 9 as a day of celebration, akin to a festival, for the people of Telangana.
Criticism of Previous Administration
During his speech, Reddy took aim at the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government, criticizing their tenure for neglecting the installation of the ‘Telangana Thalli’ statue despite their substantial spending on various projects. He accused the former administration of prioritizing other developments while ignoring the symbolic importance of the ‘Telangana Thalli’ statue, which he estimated would have cost around Rs 1 crore a relatively modest amount compared to the Rs 22.50 lakh crore spent over the last decade.
Statue to Serve as a Symbol of Pride
The Chief Minister emphasized that the ‘Telangana Thalli’ statue will not only be a point of pride for the state but also serve as a source of inspiration for its residents. The design of the statue has been entrusted to the Principal of a state-run Fine Arts College, ensuring that it reflects the cultural and emotional significance of Telangana’s identity.
The inauguration ceremony is anticipated to be a grand event, drawing thousands of attendees to witness the unveiling of this new landmark, which aims to embody the spirit and heritage of Telangana.
