Mamata Banerjee Announces Swift Legal Reforms Following Doctor’s Murder
Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has unveiled a major legislative change in response to growing protests over the recent murder of a doctor. A new bill will be introduced in the state assembly next week, mandating the death penalty for rapists as part of a broader effort to address the rise in crimes against women.
Law to Ensure Swift Justice; Dharna Threatened if Bill Is Delayed
Banerjee also announced that the revised law will ensure that legal proceedings are concluded promptly. Once the bill is passed, it will be forwarded to the Governor for approval. Should the Governor not sign the bill, Banerjee has vowed to stage a sit-in protest, or dharna, outside the Raj Bhavan.
Public Outcry Spurs Legislative Action
The announcement was made at a rally in Kolkata amid widespread outrage over the rape and murder of a female doctor in the city. In a recent letter to the Prime Minister, Banerjee had called for a special law to address the increasing incidents of rape and violence against women.
BJP Criticizes Banerjee for Double Standards
The BJP has accused Banerjee of double standards, arguing that while she publicly advocates for stricter penalties, her administration has been perceived as lenient toward criminals. The proposed bill underscores the state’s commitment to tackling gender-based violence but also prompts a debate about the effectiveness and implications of such severe legal measures.
