Blue Ridge Parkway Reopens for Fall Foliage After Hurricane Helene

The beloved Blue Ridge Parkway is welcoming visitors once again after extensive repairs following Hurricane Helene. As of Friday, the National Park Service announced that the parkway has reopened from milepost 0 to milepost 198 in Virginia, providing access to stunning fall views along one of America’s most scenic routes.

This reopening encompasses 198 miles (319 kilometers) of breathtaking landscape, stretching from Shenandoah National Park to Virginia Route 685 Skyview Drive/Turkey Ridge Road, near Fancy Gap. The parkway had been closed due to significant damage caused by Hurricane Helene, which tragically claimed 238 lives and wreaked havoc across the Southeast.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts and Future Reopenings

While the Virginia section is now accessible, the National Park Service (NPS) is working diligently to restore access to the remainder of the parkway in Virginia, aiming for full reopening within the next two weeks. However, the North Carolina segment, which suffered more severe impacts, remains closed.

Visitor Centers and Campgrounds Open for Fall Exploration

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Blue Ridge Parkway crews, vital visitor centers including Humpback Rocks, James River, and Peaks of Otter are now open. Additionally, the iconic Mabry Mill Cultural Site is welcoming guests, and the Eastern National/America’s National Parks sales outlet will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area, Peaks of Otter and Rocky Knob campgrounds are currently available on a first-come, first-served basis until Monday, after which existing reservations will be honored. Notably, Peaks of Otter Lodge continues to operate without interruption.

Caution Advised for Hikers and Outdoor Enthusiasts

While the parkway is open for scenic drives and exploration, the NPS advises caution for those planning to hike. Trail assessments are still underway, and visitors may encounter fewer services than usual, as many staff members are focused on recovery efforts in North Carolina.

With the vibrant fall foliage season upon us, now is the perfect time to explore the reopened sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Whether you’re driving or hiking, prepare for an unforgettable experience filled with the stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage that this iconic route offers.
