Jodhpur, August 13, 2024 -In a significant legal development, the Jodhpur High Court has approved a 7-day parole for Asaram Bapu, currently serving a life sentence for rape. The parole, granted by Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati, permits Asaram to receive medical treatment at Madhobagh Ayurvedic Hospital in Pune.
Asaram’s Parole for Ayurvedic Treatment
Asaram, who has been incarcerated in Jodhpur Central Jail, will be transferred to Maharashtra under police custody for specialized treatment. This decision marks the first parole he has been granted in over a decade. His recent admission to Jodhpur AIIMS due to deteriorating health prompted the parole request.
Background on Asaram’s Convictions and Incarceration
On April 25, 2018, Asaram was convicted by a special POCSO court in Jodhpur for the rape of a minor and sentenced to life imprisonment. He has been imprisoned since September 2, 2013. Additionally, a Gujarat court sentenced him to life imprisonment on January 31, 2023, for raping a female follower at his Surat ashram.
Medical Condition and Previous Requests for Treatment
Asaram has previously claimed to suffer from a condition he termed “Trinadi Shool,” although medical evaluations did not confirm the existence of this disease. Despite these findings, his health issues have been a recurring theme in his legal petitions.
Current Status and Future Plans
The recent court ruling allows Asaram to be treated at Madhobagh Ayurvedic Hospital while under strict police supervision. This temporary release is intended to address his medical needs, with the treatment closely monitored by authorities.
