Malaysia’s PM Ready to Consider Zakir Naik Extradition if Evidence is Clear

Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim Open to Extradition of Zakir Naik if Evidence is Provided

Anwar Ibrahim Addresses Extradition Concerns During his visit to India, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday and discussed a range of bilateral issues. The topic of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, who is wanted in India, was raised in a subsequent program.

Commitment to Address Terrorism

When asked about the possibility of extraditing Zakir Naik, Anwar Ibrahim stated that his government is open to considering India’s request. “If sufficient evidence is provided against Naik, action will be taken on it,” he affirmed. Ibrahim emphasized Malaysia’s commitment to combatting terrorism and expressed a willingness to review any evidence submitted by India regarding Naik

Zakir Naik, who fled India in 2016, faces allegations of money laundering and spreading religious fanaticism through hate speeches. The former Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, had granted Naik permanent residency in Malaysia in 2017, which led to his protected status in the country.

Current Status

Ibrahim mentioned that the issue of Naik’s extradition was not raised during the talks between the two prime ministers. However, he assured that the Malaysian government remains open to cooperating with India on the matter if compelling evidence is presented.
